Alchemist Apprentice was a two-week solo development project for the 15th Pirate Software Game Jam. This game jam posed a unique challenge: to develop a game by blending two different themes—shadows and alchemy—rather than the standard single theme.
I wanted to push the boundaries of Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) and discovered a small community that develops 2D games within the engine. Notably, UE5 is primarily known for its 3D game creation capabilities. Alchemist Apprentice became the first full pixel art 2D game I created using Unreal Engine.
For the game's theme, I designed the world and levels to reflect the concepts of alchemy with a fairytale aesthetic. I created the base layout of the maps using fantasy swamp sprite packs. Along with a short dialogue explaining the player character as an apprentice alchemist who must venture out to collect materials for their teacher, this describes the first half of the theme.
